NC State Alumn Carlos Rodon Tosses No Hitter
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS – North Carolina State alumni Carlos Rodon made history last night, recording his first career no-hitter versus the Cleveland Indians in an 8-0 Chicago White Sox victory. It marked the 20th no-hitter for the franchise, the second-most in Major League Baseball only behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The southpaw had a perfect game brewing into the ninth inning, but that ended as he hit catcher Roberto Perez with one out. Following the hit batter, he settled down and continued to dominate. Striking out Yu Chang looking on a nasty inside curveball. Which then set up Rodon to get his name inserted into record books, forcing Jordan Luplow to ground out to third base to complete the no-no.
He finished the evening fanning seven Indians without issuing a single walk on 114 pitches. It wasn’t until the fourth inning that he struck out his first batter. Five of his seven strikeouts were swinging. Rodon had extreme success getting groundballs, which was credited for his off-speed pitches being spot on all night long.
Rodon will forever be remembered as one of the more productive pitchers ever to put on a Wolfpack uniform. He won 25 games supporting an impressive 2.24 ERA and recorded an eye-popping 436 career strikeouts in three years. His tremendous career at NC State earned him to be selected with the third overall to the White Sox in the 2014 MLB Draft.
It has not been an easy ride for Rodon in the majors. He has struggled to stay healthy, recovering from two major surgeries that have limited him to find any type of rhythm in the big leagues. Last night’s efforts show that he can be as good as any pitcher in baseball if he is healthy.
It was an excellent night for Wolfpack nation, witnessing success from their alumni who did nothing but great things in his stint at NC State. The memorable performance puts the 28-year old at a 2-0 record for the 2021 campaign and has yet to allow an earned run in 14 innings.
