Duke Wins Series 2-1 over Wake Forest University

DURHAM, NC- Duke University Blue Devils finish their season series against Wake Forest University 2-1, after an 11-7 victory in the final game over the Deacons.

After an impressive win in game two of the series, The Blue Devils came into the third game with momentum and something to prove.

Duke came out smoking hot and took a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Ethan Murray was the first Duke player to run through home base after a single by RJ Schreck.

Schreck later scored when Michael Rothenberg grounded out to the first base.

Soon after, an RBI by Chase Cheek batted in Peter Matt. Cheek went on to steal second and third base and ran scored another run for Duke when Erikson Nichols grounded out to the shortstop.

After four unanswered runs by the hometown team, the Deacons went another quiet inning without landing a single hit. Duke, however, was not as unlucky.

Chad Knight’s home run out to left field added to Duke’s lead, 5-0, heading into the third inning.

The third and fourth inning was scoreless for both teams, but at the top of the fifth inning, Wake Forests’ offense came alive. The Deacons went off for six runs all started with Lucas Costello’s single that drove in Adam Cecere for the score.

Brock Wilken’s walk scored James Broderick cutting the lead to three runs.

When Bobby Seymour stepped to the plate, Wilken was on first, Michael Turconi sat at second and Costello was on third. With loaded bases, Seymour rocketed a pitch out to the right field, receiving 4 RBI’s and giving Wake Forest a slim one-run lead.

Duke’s Peter Matt responded with his homerun out to right-field tying the game 6-6. Not long after, Chris Crabtree’s single to the right side of the field sent in Rothenberg for another score for the Blue Devils. Giving Duke the lead.

The two teams were in a duel a good, old-fashioned duel. Wake Forest got on the board again in the top of the sixth after Cecere ran in off of Costello’s hit out to right-field was snagged.

With a 7-7 score, the Blue Devils looked for a way to take the lead once again. They did just that with Nichols homer out to the right-center-field that batted himself and Rothenberg in.

Duke scored another two runs in the bottom of the eighth with Matt’s homer that scored Schreck as well. Duke held an 11-7 advantage over the Deacons into the final inning of the game.

The Deacons were unable to score or change the tide of the game, giving Duke the win.

Duke (16-16, ACC 8-13) move on from this series to play at Liberty University this Tuesday.
