Pi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. Promotes Community Services During Pandemic

DURHAM, NC – Members of Pi Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated have continued to participate in services in a safe and supportive manner during the COVID-19 pandemic through the use of technology and other methods.

Some of the activities include:
  • Partnered with the International Association of Sickle Cell Nurses and Professional Associates to co-sponsor a Sickle Cell Webinar;
  • Sponsored Third Annual Leadership Retreat virtually;
  • Sponsored a Red Dress Event virtually in observance of National Heart Month.
Monetary donations were made to the following institutions and organizations:
  • C. C. Spaulding Elementary School;
  • Community Health Coalition, Inc.;
  • Lincoln Community Health Center Foundation, Inc.;
  • NC Food Bank, Durham Branch;
  • Triangle Nonprofit & Volunteer Leadership Center;
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The Thirteenth Scholarship Program was held virtually on March 6, 2021. The theme was “Tea Party with Pi Chapter’s Founders – Celebrating the Legacy.” The following recognitions were made

  • A Salute to Mrs. Alberta L. Allen, the only surviving charter member, and deceased founders of Pi Chapter was done by Ms. Freda G. Johnson, Corresponding Secretary;
  • Ms. Roylena Hawkins was recognized by Dr. Queen Utley-Smith, Awards Committee Chairperson, as the recipient of the Evelyn Dudley Memorial Award in honor of the first president of Pi Chapter;
  • Ms. Antwaniece Hunter and Mrs. Cheylaine Perkins were recognized by Dr. Priscilla Ramseur as the 2021 Pi Chapter Scholarship recipients;
  • Ms. Mary P. Dempson was recognized as the Soror of the Year for outstanding contributions to the chapter and the community by Mrs. Veronica Eubanks, 2019 Soror of the Year.

Other program participants were: Dr. Nicole Ware, Presider, Ms. Mary W. Burriss, Chaplain, Mr. Riley B. Walters, Jr., Chapter President, and Ms. Priscilla J. Murphy, National President of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated. Ms. Linda Rouse served as coordinator for the program.

Gifts have also been provided to Pi Gems observing safety guidelines. The Pi Gems Program was initiated by the chapter in May 2020 to honor the longevity and legacy of members who are age eighty and above with more than ten years of continuous service. There are currently six (6) Pi Gems.  

Pi Chapter is an affiliate of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Incorporated, an organization for registered nurses and student nurses. The chapter strives to uphold the organization’s motto “Service for Humanity”. Mr. Riley B. Walters, Jr. serves as President, and currently, there are thirty-six members including the only surviving charter member, Mrs. Alberta L. Allen.
