Carl Thomas, Dave Hollister & Donell Jones Form New Group ‘The Chi’, Reveal New Single
Chicago R&B music legends, Carl Thomas, Dave Hollister, and Donell Jones are joining forces to make a supergroup. The trio is calling themselves The Chi, which is perfect since they all represent Chicago’s music scene and dominated music at different times in the 90s and early 2000s.
All three artists posted the news on Instagram in late August with different captions, but all confirmed that they would be doing this project with new music coming from the trio soon.
The new group, The Chi, is unexpected because no combination of these three has collaborated with each other before. They have lived and made music in the same space and time and we’re sure that they have shared stages with each other before, but no music has been released.
The trio quietly released a teaser single, a remix to a previously released Donell Jones track, titled, “Karma.” The song includes all 3 members of The Chi along with R&B stars R.L. and Jacquees. The original song was co-written by Danielle Jones and a couple of other songwriters, but the remix is written by R.L. and Danielle Jones. (Please scroll down to watch the video.)
The clip foregoes a storyline this time around. Instead, it takes a page out of the ’90s playbook – focusing on close-ups of the soulful quintet as they stunt in dapper clothing, expensive cars, and flashy jewelry and puff on fine cigars. Naturally, a bevy of young women rounds out the cast as the men call them out for their cheating ways. We’re not sure if this familiar trope is karma, déjà vu, or a little of both. Either way, these brothers are looking sharp and doing their “good, good” singing.
Most recently Donell Jones released a new project on Valentine’s Day 2021. The 7 song EP is titled, 100% Free.
Dave Hollister released his last album, The MANuscript back in 2016 via Shanachie Entertainment.
