Hawks Rain On Falcons Homecoming Parade
RALEIGH, NC – The Saint Augustine’s University Falcons may have had homecoming today. However, the Chowan Hawks had other plans in mind.
Thanks to four rushing and passing touchdowns from senior QB Bryce Witt (Sutherland, VA) and three receiving touchdowns from junior RB Laurence King (Washington, DC), the Chowan Hawks disposed of the Falcons by the score of 59-12.
Chowan struck first, thanks to Witt’s single-yard touchdown run at 10:48 in the 1st quarter. Next, senior WR Imeek Watkins (Wilmington, NC) put the Hawks on board on a 4-yard reception from Witt, with 9:02 remaining in the 1st quarter.
Saint Aug made it competitive for a while. Freshman WR Deandre Procter (Elizabeth City, NC) caught a 92-yard reception from sophomore QB D’Ontre Gilliard, and junior LB Joseph Harris (Jacksonville, FL) recovered a fumble on the goal line to bring the score to 14-12 at the end of the 1st quarter.
However, in the 2nd quarter, things spiraled out of control for the Falcons. Bryce Witt had two touchdown runs (one two-yarder and another three-yarder) and a touchdown pass to King to seize control. The Falcons found themselves trailing 35-12 lead at halftime.
It wasn’t good in the 3rd quarter either for the Falcons. Witt broke off for a 21-yard run to inflate the Hawks lead over the Falcons, 42-12 with 11:10 remaining. Then, Laurence King added the game’s final two touchdowns on a 5-yard reception and a 24-yarder from Witt.
The Hawks were in control all game, owning the ball for 34:19 minutes, resulting in 525 yards of total offense. They recorded 315 rushing yards while they passed the ball for 210 yards. In addition, Chowan was successful on fourth down conversions.
The Falcons had a rude awakening, especially in front of students and alumni. Despite having the ball for 25:41, they only amassed 162 yards of offense and were abysmal on their third and fourth down conversions, going 3-for-15 and 0-for-1, respectively.
This was the CIAA opener for both schools this season. Next week, Chowan hosts Winston-Salem State at 6 PM in Murfreesboro, NC. On the other hand, Saint Augustine’s University travels to Ettrick, VA, to face off against the Virginia State Trojans at 6 PM.
The next home game for Saint Augustine’s University is on Saturday, October 23rd, when they face CIAA foe – Fayetteville State University, at the George Williams Athletic Complex. That day will be “Pink and White Day,” in honor of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
