SAU Sweeps CIAA Volleyball Weekly Honors

RALEIGH NC – Saint Augustine’s University (SAU) swept the CIAA women’s volleyball weekly awards on Tuesday.

Madison Jones (Fr./Durham, NC) was named both Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week. Sydney Moore (So./West Bloomfield, MI) was selected Setter of the Week, and Janina Mayers (Sr./Christ Church, Barbados) was chosen Defensive Player of the Week.

All three players helped the Lady Falcons post a 3-0 record last week. The Lady Falcons defeated Livingstone 3-1, Hollins 3-2, and Trinity (D.C.) 3-0.

This is the first time Jones and Moore have won CIAA weekly honors. The defensive award is the second straight for Mayers and the third in her college career.

Jones totaled 47 kills and 56.5 points, and Moore amassed 55 assists and 16 digs in the three victories. Mayers recorded 51 digs and 11 assists.
The three players helped turn around the SAU volleyball program this season. The Lady Falcons (3-1 Southern Division, 4-3 CIAA, 6-8 overall) are currently tied for second place in the CIAA Southern Division standings.

The Lady Falcons were winless in 2019 and won three matches in 2018. They did not play last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Jones ranks second in the CIAA in points per set (3.32), third in hitting percentage (30.1), and fourth in kills per set (2.70). Moore, who had 29 assists vs. Hollins, is tied for fourth in service aces per set (0.49), and Mayers ranks fifth in digs per set (3.72).
