NCCU’s Fall Jazz Week Brings Renowned Musicians To Campus

DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Department of Music will offer live performances during its Fall Jazz Week that runs from Sunday, Nov. 14, through Friday, Nov. 19, 2021.

This year’s lineup will feature accomplished professional artists and student musicians from the NCCU Jazz Studies Program. All events are free and open to the public, with donations to the NCCU Jazz Studies Program are encouraged.

Prominent jazz artists slated to perform during Fall Jazz Week include Grammy award-winning bassist and composer Eric Revis, jazz drummer Nasheet Waits, and jazz tenor saxophonist and composer J.D. Allen.

  • The festivities will kick off with the Give the Drummer Some, a jazz percussion concert in the H.M. Michaux Jr. School of Education Building Auditorium. NCCU music faculty and alumni with Revis, Waits, and Allen at 6 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 14.
  • NCCU Jazz Student Combos will perform a live concert in the New Jazz Band Room in the B.N. Duke Auditorium Annex at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17. 
  • At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 18, NCCU Jazz Student Vocal Combo and Jazz Ensemble 2 will perform a special concert in the New Jazz Band Room in the B.N. Duke Auditorium Annex.
  • On Friday, Nov. 19, NCCU Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1 will provide entertainment at 8 p.m. in the H.M. Michaux Jr. School of Education Building Auditorium.

NCCU was the first university in the state to offer the Bachelor of Music degree in jazz studies. The program now includes a comprehensive vocal jazz component and offers a Master of Music in both jazz composition and jazz performance.

NCCU artists-in-residence and GRAMMY Award winners Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo are involved in workshops and other instructional opportunities. Alumni from the jazz studies program include professors at the college and university levels, teachers of primary and secondary music education, as well as production and performance artists.
