Bears Cold Shooting Effort Leads Shaw To Claflin Loss
Raleigh, NC – The Shaw University Bears struggled to find a rhythm in a tough home loss against the Claflin Panthers 92-63 on Thursday night at the CC Spaulding Gymnasium.
The Panthers shot a blazing 11-20 from beyond the arc for 55% on the night while Shaw shot an ice-cold 1-12 from three. The Bears ended up on the wrong side of all statistical categories for the game.
Things started out tight from the tip with the score being tied at eight with 15:30 remaining in the half. Claflin (2-6, 1-0 CIAA) then went on a 7-0 run to go ahead 15-8 with 13:30 left on the clock. A basket from Jason Robinson ended the Panthers run followed by a basket by Doriuntas Barnes to force a Claflin timeout with Shaw (4-3, 0-1 CIAA) trailing 20-14.
The game of runs continued with a 7-0 Panthers run pushing their lead to 27-14 with 9:55 left before the break. The Shaw deficit grew to 35-20 at the 4:49 media timeout. The Panthers remained hot from beyond the arc pushing their lead up to 41-24 before making the score 52-32 at halftime.
The Bears sliced into the Panthers lead thanks to a 5-0 run from Brandon Faison. Claflin didn’t cool off much keeping the Shaw deficit at 64-45 at the first media timeout of the second half. Shaw was unable to carve into the Panthers lead as the Bears trailed 7-58 with 6:10 left in regulation. The rough night for the Bears continued as they could get not get any closer before falling by the final score 92-63
Shaw returns to action December 15 as they host Fayetteville State University in a CIAA cross division tilt. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m.
