ZEBULON, NC – Bryana Powell, a thirteen-year-old girl, was getting adjusted to online schooling. She noticed she was struggling to find the confidence to turn her Zoom camera on during class. So, she did what has always seemed to have given her courage; putting on lip gloss. “Okay Bryana, this is the spark,” she thinks to herself. She realized that she wanted to provide a way for everyone to feel that same level of confidence and security that she felt while wearing lip gloss. This revelation inspired her to launch BlotbyBree, a lip gloss, and lip product line, on February 10, 2021. 

Powell decided, with the help of her mother, that she was going to teach herself how to make her own products. She quickly realized that she needed to go beyond watching YouTube videos.  She then started to conduct her own research.  This allowed her to come up with combinations that included her own personal touches. “Sometimes there were long, hard nights, but I did it!” says Powell with a proud grin on her face.

The entrepreneur first began creating products for women of all ages. This includes her personal favorite, “The Smell of Success,” a customizable sparkly, scented gloss. The most popular, “Madam Vice President,” is a gloss that comes in both “Red” and “Pearl White,” inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris. She surpassed her initial start-up goal by selling over 100 products within her first two weeks of business. Shortly after, Powell began receiving requests to launch a men’s line. “I want everyone to know that we are not just targeted towards women, we have products for men, too,” she says. Customers are able to browse through products and order them directly on the official BlotByBree website. Lip glosses and balms can also be customized based on the oil base, colors, and packaging. 

As a young small business owner, Powell says her greatest challenge thus far has been growing her presence on social media. However, she is constantly collaborating with her mother to promote her line. She credits a lot of her success to the love she receives from her family and peers and “being real” with her customers. She also stays committed to making and shipping her products within just a couple of days from when orders are placed. 

The Future of Lip Gloss

“Some people struggle with confidence more than others and some people already have a high amount of confidence, but they just need that extra push. Lip gloss did that for me, so I feel like it can do that for everybody,” says Powell. With the support from her family and friends, including her father who aids as a product tester at times, she hopes to one day make BlotbyBree a household name and see her products on the shelves of beauty stores.
