Weekend Of Enlightenment: George Floyd Memorial Center’s First Annual Signature Fundraiser
Raleigh, NC – During the last two years since the tragic and senseless killing of George Perry Floyd, Jr., his family in his birth state of North Carolina has been organizing and doing the thoughtful groundwork to establish a physical center to honor his life and legacy – The George Floyd Memorial Center (GFMC). The goal of the Center is to forge a path to deeper understanding between members of the community and to encourage personal growth, healing, and emotional and financial prosperity for families.
The George Floyd Memorial Center Weekend of Enlightenment events were planned to be in person, but the organization has decided to shift everything online except for the charity golf tournament which will still take place in person at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, NC.
“While we had faithfully planned to bring everyone together in person this year, out of an abundance of caution, we are shifting our planning to create two dynamic virtual experiences to go with the in-person charity golf tournament,” said Thomas McLaurin, Executive Director, George’s first cousin. “Not only will this allow us to keep everyone safe, but it will also give us the opportunity for a greater reach to people who want to participate from around the world, especially since his tragic killing impacted the world.”
Weekend of Enlightenment plans are now as follows, with the hopes of being able to be in person in 2023. Details can be found on the organization’s website www.georgefloydmc.org.
- 5/25/2022 – Day of Enlightenment (DOE) virtual Town Hall 11 a.m. -12:30 p.m.; FREE
- 5/27/2022 – Charity Golf Tournament at Lochmere Golf Club in Cary, NC – 7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. start; $150

The funds raised through the support of attendees, sponsors, and donors will be used towards staffing, programming, and to build the Center, and beginning the far-reaching programming for the community, and eventually the nation and world.
“As a family, we made a conscious decision not to become bitter victims, but rather to use the momentum of the global outcry and outrage to become a vessel of change and lead communities from perpetual trauma to transformation,” said Roger Floyd, Chief Impact Officer, GFMC, and George’s uncle. “Starting with 5/25 the Weekend Of Enlightenment will be uplifting, empowering, enlightening, and the beginning of the catalyst to positively impact the lives of individuals in the communities we seek to serve.”
“We believe by sharing in this ‘Weekend Of Enlightenment’ and raising funds for the physical construction of the Center, we will collectively be able to continue to uplift and support individuals and community organizations making a difference in Raleigh and beyond,” said Fred Huff, Director of Program Development.
