Duke Defeats Longwood in 13 Innings
DURHAM, NC – The Duke Blue Devils snap a 4-game losing streak defeating Longwood in 13 innings.
The Longwood Lancers (13-17) struck first with the game’s first run. Hunter Gilliam and Michael Peterson struck back-to-back singles that got their runners on first and third.
These two led the Lancers offensively with three hits apiece, four RBIs combined, and two runs. Longwood had ten hits in the game and walked twice.
Duke (13-16) scored two runs in the bottom of the first on a Pauley double and a Knight SAC fly.
The Blue Devils then added two more runs in the second inning after Damon Lux walked and Devon Obee hit a two-run to the left-center. Duke then added one more through a Luke Storm solo shot that went right over the center fence.
However, Longwood would not go away without a fight and added three runs in the top of the fifth. Keondre Shelton converted on a two-out walk and Hayden Harris hit a single to give the Lancers runners on first and second. With a Peterson double and a Gilliam single, three runners came home to create a one-score ball game.
The Lancers tied the game in the top of the ninth. After the Blue Devils loaded the bases in back-to-back innings, Yunit walked in the bottom of the thirteenth to win the game for Duke.
The Blue Devils used a total of seven pitchers in the game and struck out 16 batters. Adam Boucher was on the diamond field for Duke in the 13th inning and picked up his second win of the year after striking out in the top of the 13th.
Duke returns to action on April 8th against the Wake Forest Deacons at David F. Couch Ballpark, at 6:00 on ESPN+
