Bulls Get Shutout by Jacksonville in Home Opener
DURHAM, N.C. — The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp shut out the Durham Bulls 7-0 Tuesday evening in the Bulls’ home opener at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls (2-5) fell in the first of a six-game series on an evening where the Durham batters only had two hits. Jumbo Shrimp starting pitcher Max Meyer pitched a no-hitter through the first five innings, striking out eight Bulls batters.
The Jumbo Shrimp (2-5) on the other hand, came out hot scoring six runs in the first two innings. Jacksonville left fielder Peyton Burdick crushed a solo home run to left-center field on the second at-bat of the game.
After a pair of walks loaded the bases at the top of the second, first baseman Lewin Diaz drilled a ground ball to center field, bringing in two runs from Joe Dunand and Brian Miller. On the next immediate at-bat, designated hitter Lorenzo Quintana hit a line-drive double to center field, bringing Burdick home from third for Jacksonville’s fifth run. With two outs, Jumbo Shrimp right fielder JJ Bleday singled to left field, bringing in Diaz for a 6-0 Jacksonville lead early.
Bulls pitchers Zack Erwin and Adrian De Horta pitched a combined four and a half innings, giving up all seven runs and seven hits in that span. De Horta received his first loss of the season at 0-1.
Durham didn’t get their first hit until the bottom of the seventh when Isaac Paredes singled a line drive to left field. After Ryan Boldt grounded into a double play, Rene Pinto singled to left field for the Bulls’ second and final hit of the game. On the following at-bat, Ford Proctor struck out swinging ending the inning.
The Bulls look to bounce back tomorrow in the second game of their series with Jacksonville at 6:35 PM ET in Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
