White’s Milestone Helps Wolfpack Reach ACC Semifinals

CHARLOTTE, NC — The NC State Wolfpack (34-20) defeat the Miami Hurricanes (39-17) to advance to the ACC Conference Semifinals, 9-6.

Tommy “Tanks” White’s recorded setting night, hitting three homers to set the NC State freshman record, fuels the Pack past the Hurricanes. White’s three homers tonight give him 26 on the season.

The Wolfpack’s trio of pitchers were Matt Willadsen, Logan Whitaker, and Chris Villaman.

Willadson (5-4) was tonight’s winning pitching, and Miami’s Carson Palmquist (9-4) was on the losing side.

INF Tommy White started things off for the Pack, homering in the bottom of the first off a pitch from Palmquist.

After a scoreless second inning, both teams started to heat in the third, Miami’s hottest inning. They scored four runs.

INF CJ Kayfus set the tone for the Hurricanes tonight. His single to center field allowed OF Gaby Gutierrez to score at the top of the third.

INF Yohandy Morales homered to left field at the top of the third off a pitch from Whitaker. His teammates Kayfus and INF Dominic Pitelli capitalized off the homer with two scoring runs.

The Pack stayed resilient and managed scores from innings three through six.

White’s second homer was to right field at the bottom of the third.

LuJames Groover III scored a run off White’s homer to make the score 4-3. Groover III continued his great play in the bottom of the fourth, doubling to right field, allowing scores from teammates INF/OF Devonte Brown and OF Noah Soles.

NC State’s INF Josh Hood capped off the fourth with a single, advancing on a throwing error. Groover III scored again, ending the Pack past Miami, 6-4.

Miami’s Maxwell Romero Jr. homered to right field at the top of the fifth to keep the Canes alive, 7-5.

The fifth and sixth innings for the Pack were accompanied by homers from Soles and White (his third of the night), and a third score from

Groover III.

The Hurricanes Morales singled to left field, allowing another score from Kayfus, but it wasn’t enough to edge the Pack.

The final score was 9-6. Villaman sealed their victory.

Groover III, Soles, and White, the Packs home run machine, shined tonight in the Pack’s victory.

The Pack’s next matchup will be this Saturday, May 28th, against the winner of Pool D at 5:00 pm.
