From ACC Freshman of The Year to #1 NBA Draft Pick
DURHAM, NC– Paolo Banchero, 6’10 power forward freshman from Duke University, was drafted to the Orlando Magic as the number one pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.
When the draft, Jabari Smith from Auburn was suspected of landing the number one pick, but the Magic switched things up by selecting Banchero.
As the 5 star-recruit for the class of 2021, Banchero held up to that standard during his freshman season with the Duke Blue Devils. He averaged 17.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and had a 47.8% field goal percentage.
In his college debut, Banchero scored 22 points against the Kentucky Wildcats who were ranked #10 at the time. His ability to create his own separation in tight spaces and pull-up over defenders is what sparked conversation about being a top draft pick. Banchero was a key weapon on offense for the Blue Devils in the mid-range which is also another element that he brings to the table for his professional career.
Paolo continued to add more titles to his name besides being known as the 6’10 five-star recruit from Seattle, Washington. He was named ACC Freshman of the Year, ACC All-Freshman Team, First-Team ACC All-Tournament, named to Wooden Award National Ballet, and a finalist for Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award.
He finished his collegiate career with a final four appearance where Paolo put up 20 points and 10 boards against the North Carolina Tar Heels. He led all true freshmen nationally in scoring while ranking sixth in rebounding and fifth in field goal percentage. His athleticism, skill, and overall success in his lone season with the Blue Devils is what aided in being a first-round draft pick.
Banchero will be alongside Jalen Suggs, Cole Anthony, Franz Wagner, Jonathan Isaac, and Wendall Carter Jr. as the Magic’s developing rebuild.
