Sounds tune out Bulls late Friday evening
DURHAM, NC – The Nashville Sound (73-47) left 8,855 fans at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park disappointed as they defeated the Durham Bulls (67-54) 11-8, thanks to two homers by right fielder Joey Wiemer.
During the apex of the first inning, the Sounds silenced the Bulls crowd by scoring four runs to open the game, thanks to shortstop Bruce Turang’s homer over Chris Muller (4-3) and catcher Pedro Severino’s two-run single.
At the top of the third inning, the Sounds kept making noise, thanks to right fielder Joey Wiemer blasting his first of two homers over center field to make the game 5-0. Durham battled back at the bottom of the third inning as they scored three runs, thanks to a two-run homer from second baseman Vidal Turan and a run scored by left fielder Jonathan Aranda.
During the fifth inning, the Sounds kept on scoring, thanks to a three-run homer over the right field wall by first baseman Jon Singleton, as designated hitter Estuary Ruiz and Shortstop Brice Turang scored runs to make it 8-3 Nashville. The Bulls battled back in the bottom of the fifth as second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni scored as Josh Lowe doubled on a line drive over Sounds left fielder Mike Lipka. Lowe scored on a groundout by catcher Rene Pinto. Nashville lead the Bulls by a score of 8-5 after the fifth inning.
The seventh inning saw the Sounds inflate their lead to 11-5, thanks to Ruiz scoring on a run from a single from Jon Singleton and another homer from Joey Wiemer. The Bulls added a run from left fielder Jonathan Aranda to make it 11-6 toward the end of the inning.
The bottom of the ninth saw the Bulls battle back, thanks to 2 RBIs from catcher Rene Pinto, as Josh Lowe and Luke Raley scored runs. Unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be as the Bulls lost to the Sounds 11-8.
The winning pitcher for the Sounds was RHP Justin Topa. Topa pitched 1.2 innings and allowed a hit, with an ERA of 3.86. He came in relief for RHP Dylan File, as File pitched 4.1 innings, allowed eight hits, five runs, and a home run, committed five errors, and recorded four strikeouts. Nashville LHP Luis Perdomo pitched for two innings, recording three hits and three strikeouts while allowing one run and committing one error. RHP Cam Robinson pitched the last inning, recording two strikeouts, committing two errors and allowed two hits and runs.
RHP Chris Muller took the loss for the Bulls, as he only pitched an inning, where he allowed four hits and runs each – one of which was a home run, while recording one strikeout, walking a batter, and committing three errors. RHP Cooper Criswell came in relief for Muller, pitching four innings, recording three strikeouts, allowing five hits, four runs, and two homers. RHP Matt Wisler, LHP Dalton Moats, RHP Nick Anderson, and RHP Dustin Knight pitched one inning each for Durham.
