NC State Extends Home Win Streak v VT

RALEIGH, NC – Wolfpack quarterback MJ Morris got hot late to lead North Carolina State to defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies 22-21 on Thursday night in Carter-Finley Stadium

The win extends NC State’s home winning streak at Carter-Finley Stadium to 15 consecutive wins, ranking 6th-best in the FBS, and is the second-longest in the history of Carter-Finley Stadium (which opened in 1966).

Both teams nearly went the whole first half without scoring before NC State kicker Christopher Dunn hit a 35-yard field goal to give the Wolfpack a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.

After halftime, Virginia Tech would come out scoring 21 unanswered points.

Hokies QB Grant Wells had an 85-yard passing TD to Kaleb Smith sandwiched in between two red zone rushing touchdowns to take a 21-3 lead with 4 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

NC State quarterback MJ Morris would give the Wolfpack a well-needed spark, moving the team down the field aggressively before finding wide receiver Thayer Thomas on a 35-yard strike to cut the deficit to 11 at 21-10.

MJ Morris would find running. back Trent Pennix on a 7 yard touchdown strike to pull the home team within a one-score game.

After a big stop from the Wolfpack defense, the Pack once against aggressively moved the ball down the field quickly.

Morris would find Thayer Thomas on a screen pass to the left side of the field. Thomas made a few player miss and continued 18 yards for the go-ahead score for NC State. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful to keep the score at 22-21 in favor of the home team.

Virginia Tech would get one more chance to make late-game magic happen but the Wolfpack defense finished the game in a stingy mood to prevent VT from advancing the ball and forcing a turnover on downs.

MJ Morris finished the game for NC State 20-for-29, throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns. WR Thayer Thomas finished the game with 10 receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Linebackers Drake Thomas and Payton Wilson led the Wolfpack with eight and seven total tackles, respectively.

Virginia Tech was led offensively by QB Wells Grant, who finished the game 11-for-22, 260 total yards, and three total touchdowns (2 rush, pass). WR Kaleb Smith had three catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Alan Tisdale led the Hokies with 11 total tackles (5 solo) and a sack.

The Wolfpack will look to keep their momentum going next week as they host the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on November 5th at 8 pm for a homecoming matchup.
