Duke dominates second half, routs Delaware by thirty

DURHAM, NC — The No. 7 ranked Duke Blue Devils defeated the Delaware Blue Hens 92-58 late on Friday night in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils were led by freshman forward Kyle Filipowski, who finished with 18 points, and eight rebounds and had the highest +/- on the floor tonight at +30. Filipowski’s effort on both ends of the floor played a huge part in sparking the run in the second half which ultimately led to the win.

Duke came out the gate on a 10-5 run as Filipowski got on the board early with five quick points. Blue Devils freshman guard Tyrese Proctor led another run for Duke, giving them a 12-point lead midway through the first half.

Proctor had his best game of the season, putting in 13 points and 10 rebounds, recording the first double-double of his collegiate career. He is the first Australian-born Blue Devil all-time to post a double-double.

“I just tried doing the little things tonight and emphasized my hustle on the defensive end,” Proctor told me after the game smiling ear to ear. “We had to share the ball more in the second half which opened up a lot of opportunities for not only just me, but everyone else.”

Duke led by just six heading into the second half before the Blue Devils went on a massive 22-2 run to widen the gap. Freshman forward Mark Mitchell came alive during this run, finishing with 12 points, and was +15 on the floor.

The Blue Devils out-rebounded Delaware 47-25, including a 16-6 advantage on the offensive glass. Through the first four games this season, Duke has a 73-32 advantage in offensive rebounds. Their 209 points allowed through four games are its second-fewest through the first four games of a season in the AP Poll era (since 1949) – the 2006-07 team allowed 195 through the first four games.

“I think the biggest thing is just the fact that we were solid in the second half. We were pretty spread out there in that first half,” Duke head coach Jon Scheyer told media members after the game. “I thought we did a much better job of being disciplined, controlling the ball, and having an awareness for protecting our rim.”

The Blue Devils look to keep rolling on Monday as they take on the Bellarmine Knights at 8:30 p.m. at home in Cameron Indoor Stadium on ACC Network.
