Edey, Purdue routs Duke to win Phil Knight Legacy Championship
PORTLAND, OR — Junior big man Zach Edey put in 21 points and 12 rebounds for No. 24 Purdue as the Boilermakers upset No. 8 Duke in the Phil Knight Legacy championship.
Duke struggled to defend Edey, as the 7-foot-4 big man was 7 for 13 from the field and 7 for 8 at the line. He was named Phil Knight Legacy tournament MVP.
“They have the most unique player in the country,” Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said of Edey. “He’s a hard guy to prepare for because there’s nobody else like him in the country.”
The Boilermakers had a slow start to this game as Duke came out on a 14-7 run led by Blue Devils guard Jeremy Roach. Coming off of his 21-point and five assists outing on Friday against Xavier, Roach finished the day with 14 points in 37 minutes.
For the next eight minutes, Purdue would go on a 23-4 run led by Edey and forward Caleb Furst. Furst recorded just his second career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Toward the end of the half, the Boilermakers would lead by as much as 18 as they went into the halftime break up 11.
Freshmen Kyle Filipowski and Tyrese Proctor would lead the way for Duke in the second half as both scored buckets to start. The Blue Devils would bring their deficit to seven behind eight second-half points from Proctor, who would lead all Duke scorers with 16 points. Despite the second-half rally from Duke, the defensive effort from the Blue Devils was poor, to say the least.
A big problem for Duke throughout the game was their inability to rebound when it mattered most. Seven-foot Blue Devils big men Dereck Lively II and Kyle Filipowski were in foul trouble throughout the second half and eventually fouled out. Due to this, Edey and Furst were able to capitalize.
Purdue guard Fletcher Loyer would score 12 of his 18 points on the afternoon in the second half. A large portion of his points in the second half came from second-chance opportunities as the Boilermakers grabbed 11 offensive rebounds in the second half alone — ending the game on a 12-0 run.
Duke looks to bounce back at home on Wednesday when they take on Ohio State at 7:15 p.m. in Cameron Indoor Stadium on ESPN.
