Duke Falls to No. 8 Virginia in OT After Controversial Call
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Virginia guard Armaan Franklin scored a game-high 23 points in 37 minutes to help guide the No. 8 ranked Cavaliers to a 69-62 win over Duke on Saturday evening in John Paul Jones Arena.
The next few days will be filled with conversation following an overturned foul call on Blue Devils forward Kyle Filipowski as time expired to end the first half.
With 1.2 seconds remaining in the second half with the game tied up at 58, Tyrese Proctor imbounded the ball to Kyle Filipowski — who was cutting to the rim and drew contact on the body and wrist by both Reece Beekman and Ryan Dunn. Originally, the baseline official called a foul as the buzzer sounded, but after discussion with the other referees, the foul was overturned and sent the game to overtime.
We’ll let you decide: Did the refs miss this call before regulation?
This was initially called a foul on the floor but was overturned after review. #Duke would go on to lose in OT.

“Flip made a big-time play getting to the basket,” Duke head coach Jon Scheyer said after the game. “There’s no doubt in my mind he’s knocking down those free throws. I feel for Flip and our team.”
Virginia (19-4, 11-3 ACC) would go on to outscore Duke 11-4 in the overtime period as the Cavaliers’ backcourt of Franklin and guard Kihei Clark made key plays down the stretch to take Virginia over the top for the victory. Clark finished with 16 points and five assists.
The Cavaliers dominated Duke at the rim, outscoring the Blue Devils 42-24 in the paint. A large part of this lopsided effort from Duke was the absence of physicality from their starting frontcourt.
Dereck Lively II, who has had a great recent stretch of games averaging four blocks and nearly nine rebounds, played just 11 minutes where he scored two points and grabbed just three rebounds. Filipowski also had his worst shooting night of the season where he went scoreless for the first time all year.
On a bright note, Duke remained close in this game due to the play of its backcourt duo of Jeremy Roach and Tyrese Proctor. Roach finished the game with 16 points and is averaging 14.1 points per game on 48 percent shooting from the field and 40.7 percent shooting from downtown since returning from a toe injury on Jan. 21.

Proctor also added 14 points, four assists and four rebounds in the loss. New Jersey native Dariq Whitehead returned to action today — scoring 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting after missing the last four games with a sprain in his lower left leg.
“We battled but it’s disappointing. We came here to win,” Scheyer told the media after the game. “Virginia is a really good team but you’re not going to beat anyone with 22 turnovers. I haven’t seen the play at the end and can’t comment without looking at it.”
Duke (17-8, 8-6 ACC) looks to snap their two-game losing skid on Tuesday as they take on Notre Dame at home in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 7 PM ET on ESPN.
