Durham, N.C. – Tonight (Feb. 13)  was all about North Carolina Central basketball, which defeated Coppin State 85-52. Tonight also marks  NCCU Coach Levelle Moton’s 240th win. He surpassed John McLendon for  NCCU’s all-time winning list and now Coach Moton sits in second place.

It started with NCCU’s center Brendan Medley-Bacon who lit up the room with his put-back dunk over two defenders in the McDougald-McLendon Arena.

Central’s starters Marque Maultsby and Kris Monroe carried with catch-and-shoot threes. Monroe had 22 points and 8 rebounds in his 18 minutes of playing in the first half. NC Central limited Coppin’s guard Sam Sessoms’s role but he still put up his average numbers, he shot 50% from 3-pt land and had 14 points to close the half.

In the second half, North Carolina Central closed the game out entirely. With a 54-31 lead, Central continued to drain threes while remaining in their starting lineup.

NC Central dished the ball out and outdid Coppin State in assists, 18-7. With shooters like Marque Maultsby, Fred Cleveland Junior, Eric Boone, and Kris Monroe on the court, the methods of scoring were endless. Monroe recorded a double-double tonight with 25 points and 14 rebounds. With 25 points he hit a season-high. Fred Cleveland Jr. was a facilitating 2-way guard in the space of Justin Wright. Sam Sessoms sat out for much of the 2nd half, in either case, Central limited his touches. Sessoms was on the court for 30 minutes tonight whereas, in his last two games, he played 35 and 37 minutes. Central improves 12-11 with the win.
