Virginia Tech’s projected WNBA prospect, Elizabeth Kitley ended the first quarter with 11 points which are as many points as Duke scored in the first quarter. Overall, the Hokies dominated in the first half. Kitley played a major role in Virginia Tech’s offensive and defensive runs.  She recorded a double-double tonight with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Duke had a rough sequence that lasted the entire second quarter. They only put up three points in the second quarter. They shot 1-11 and of those 11 were four three-point attempts. None of Duke’s threes went in during the second quarter.

In the second half, Hokie’s work on the glass and became more and more noticeable. The Hokies out-rebounded the Blue Devils 41-23.

It seemed like nobody on Duke could have a breakout moment. Duke’s star players that could spark a fire for their appeared invisible on the stat sheets. Shayeann Day-Wilson only had six field goal attempts and Reigan Richardson had one point.

Virginia Tech averages 73 points per game while Duke has only allowed an average of 50.7 points against opponents in a game. Tonight Virginia Tech was able to beat the 50-point mark with 8:57 left in the fourth.

The leading scorers for each team include Blue Devils guard, Celeste Taylor who had 12 points tonight. Georgia Amoore and Elizabeth Kitley both had 20 points for the Hokies.

This game definitely set the tone for what is to come in Greensboro. Duke is ranked highest in ACC rankings with Virginia Tech at the three spot. V Tech has to feel great with a four-game win streak with their most recent win against a formidable foe. Duke looks to rebound from this loss by playing their top level of basketball possession after possession.

Duke’s next matchup is against the  Virginia Cavaliers (15-11, ACC 4-11) on Sunday, February 19 at 2 pm in the John Paul Jones Arena
