Four NCCU Eagles Earn All-MEAC Honors; Medley-Bacon Tabbed Defensive Player of the Year
NORFOLK, Va. – North Carolina Central University senior center Brendan Medley-Bacon was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team All-MEAC. He is joined by junior guard Justin Wright on the second team, while senior guard Eric Boone and senior forward Kris Monroe are All-MEAC Third Team selections. Boone and Medley-Bacon were also voted to the MEAC All-Defensive Team.
Brendan Medley-Bacon (Baltimore, Maryland) MEAC DPOY, All-MEAC Second Team & MEAC All-Defensive Team
Medley-Bacon has been a force on both ends of the floor as he pours in 12.1 points, snags 5.6 boards, and swats a MEAC best 2.0 shots a game. His 56 total blocks are the third most in a single season by an Eagle and his 2.0 blocks per contest is the 26th-best average in the country.
His best game was on Jan. 21 against Delaware State, when he posted 21 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, grabbed seven rebounds, and swatted seven shots. He also had 17 points, eight rebounds, and six blocks against Morgan State on Feb. 11, and on Feb. 25 against Howard, he tied Adrian McKinnon for the NCCU single-game record for blocks with eight.
Justin Wright (Greenville, N.C.) All-MEAC Second Team
Wright earns All-MEAC honors for the second consecutive year. Last year he became the youngest Eagle to be named First Team All-MEAC. He followed that campaign by stuffing the stat sheet and proving to be one of the best all-around players in the league.
Wright has spearheaded the offense all season. He averages 16 points while shooting 47.3% from the field and 40% from downtown. He also adds 2.1 assists and 1.4 steals per outing to round out his game. His most prolific contest this season was on Feb. 11 against Morgan State, when he registered 25 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 9-of-12 from the field, 2-of-3 from deep, and 5-of-6 from the foul line. He also had 12 games this season when he recorded two or more steals.
Eric Boone (Lexington, Kentucky) All-MEAC Third Team & MEAC All-Defensive Team
Boone has been a steady two-way menace for the marron and gray this season and earns all-conference honors for the second consecutive season. From the lead guard position, he averages 7.2 points, 5.3 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and a league-best 2.3 steals per game. His 5.3 dimes are second-best in the MEAC and rank 31st nationally.
Boone stuffs the stat sheet and his best game of the season was on Feb. 20 against Maryland Eastern Shore, when he dished out 12 assists, corralled nine boards, scored seven points, and swiped seven steals. Boone’s seven takeaways is the sixth most by an Eagle in a single game, and he recorded multiple steals in all 18 contests this season.
Kris Monroe (Raleigh, N.C.) All-MEAC Third Team
Monroe provides offense from all over the floor and is a versatile player that can be a mismatch for matchups. Monroe scores 10.0 points and grabs 5.6 boards while making 1.5 3-pointers per game.
Monroe scored in double figures 12 times this season and had five games with double-digit rebounds. His most impressive game was on Feb. 13, when he exploded for 25 points and snagged 16 rebounds, both career bests. He shot 52.9% from the field (9-17) and had one of his best games while dawning the maroon and gray.
NCCU (17-11, 10-4 MEAC) will begin the MEAC Tournament at the Norfolk Scope Arena as the No. 2 seed against No. 7 Delaware State on Wednesday, March 8 at 8 p.m.
