DURHAM, NC – This evening (March 12), Dr. Monique Holsey-Hyman announced her candidacy for election to the Durham City Council. Held at Durham’s historic Hayti Heritage Center, this campaign kick-off afforded guests the opportunity to hear Dr. Hyman’s plans when elected to return to the City Council as an At-Large Council member.

Dr. Holsey-Hyman will promote safer communities by implementing innovative strategies addressing public safety and the Durham Community Safety Department’s HEART (Holistic Empathetic Assistance Response Teams) program. She will advocate for sustainable and affordable housing, promote a green and equitable Durham, and through her passion for mentoring youth, develop evidence-based approaches to enhance community safety through youth mentoring programs.

Dr. Holsey-Hyman was unanimously appointed to fill the seat vacated by Charlie Reece in 2022. In addition to being a Durham City Council Member At-Large, Dr. Hyman is an assistant professor at North Carolina Central University (NCCU). She has been honored to receive the 2022 NCCU Excellence in Teaching Award in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities and the NCCU Department of Social Work Innovative Instruction and Mentoring Award. In 2021, she received the NCCU Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 2019, was awarded the NCCU Crystal Eagle Excellence Award for Outstanding Social Work.

Dr. Holsey-Hyman has over 25 years of direct social work practice in child welfare, mental health, community healthcare, grassroots community development, advocacy, and management, with 17 years in administrative and academic leadership. She was named Spectacular Magazine‘s 2017 Woman of the Year for her work in education.

Never missing an opportunity to enhance her craft in the area of leadership, Dr. Holsey-Hyman completed the Higher Education Leadership Foundation Nu Cohort, North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership (IOPL), and was a Regional Triangle Leadership Goodman Fellow. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services and Sociology from the State University of New York at Binghamton, Master of Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work, and Doctorate in Education Leadership and Administration from the Richard W. Riley College of Education at Walden University.

Dr. Holsey-Hyman, a native of South Bronx, New York, is married with two daughters and is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She places the residents of Durham at the forefront of all of her decisions as it is important to her to remember the voices of all residents and communities in the City of Durham.
