72-Year-Old Man Charged With Maiming Blind, Bedridden Victim With Knife In Durham Nursing Home
DURHAM, N.C. — A 72-year-old man has been arrested for attacking and maiming a blind and bedridden man at the Carver Rehabilitation and Living Center in Durham.
WRAL reports that Broadcastify radio traffic shows the call came in as a stabbing.
The warrant offers explicit detail of the injuries suffered by Judd Daniel, whom the warrant describes as “legally blind, bedridden, and unable to walk or push a wheelchair by himself.”
Thomas Britt is charged with:
- Assault causing serious bodily injury
- Assault with a deadly weapon
- Maiming without malice
- Assaulting an individual with a disability
According to the warrant for his arrest, issued on April 23, Britt “carved the face of the victim with a serrated butter knife, exposing the bone of the skull.”
After his arrest, Britt’s answers to investigators about the attack raised so many questions that they referred him for a mental evaluation.
“During his initial evaluation with the jail mental health provider, he was disoriented to self, date, place, and situation. Britt stated his name was Woodrow Wilson,” according to documents.
He was committed to Central Regional Hospital’s Butner Campus for examination.
The documentation says Britt “does not appear to comprehend the nature of the charges and has no memory of the alleged incident.”
