‘Friends Of Mike Leonard’ Fund Has Raised Over $75,000 For Greensboro’s Learn To Swim Program
GREENSBORO – Contributions made in honor of former Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC) volunteer instructor and member Mike Leonard have raised over $75,000 for the GAC’s ‘Learn to Swim’ program with Guilford County Schools.
A longtime GAC ‘Learn to Swim’ program volunteer, Leonard passed away in September 2022. The donations made in Leonard’s memory are being utilized to fund lessons for second-grade students of Sternberger Elementary School. Sternberger students will begin their lessons – the first time the school has participated in the program – on May 22 at Starmount Forest Country Club (1 Sam Snead Drive, Greensboro, 27410).
In addition to Sternberger Elementary, contributions collected in Leonard’s memory will also be used to fund swim lessons for Lindley Park Elementary School beginning in the 2023-24 school year.
In partnership with Guilford County Schools, the GAC’s curriculum-based ‘Learn to Swim’ healthy lifestyle program debuted in 2011 and has provided swim lessons to 12,308 local second-graders to date. Sternberger Elementary is one of 40 Guilford County schools receiving lessons this year at no cost to the student.
