Performance Schedule: 18th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration Is “The Party of the Year!”

partyDURHAM, NC – Spectacular Magazine and Triangle Cultural Awareness Foundation are hosting the “Party of the Year” this weekend, celebrating the ending of chattel slavery in the U.S. and that Juneteenth is now a federal holiday! The 18th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration takes place Saturday, June 17 from 1 pm – 10 pm, and Sunday, June 18 from 12 pm – 6 pm on the Golden Belt Campus (For GPS Purposes: 1005 Franklin Street – Durham, NC). The event is free and open to all.

The annual North Carolina Juneteenth Celebration is officially sanctioned by the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation and recognized by the Library of Congress. Today, Juneteenth is embraced and celebrated by all races and ethnicities in honor, and in commemoration of African American culture and achievements. In 2007, North Carolina became the 26th state to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or a state holiday observance when it is recognized nationally. In April 2009, Juneteenth Celebration in Durham was officially designated as The Annual North Carolina Juneteenth Celebration by the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation. On June 17, 2021, it was officially announced that June 19 will be known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a US federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Now, that’s a reason to party!

Entertainment throughout the day will keep the celebration hype!

Here is the Performance Schedule:

 

This party kicks off with the official Opening Ceremony that includes prayer, an inspirational message, spoken word, songs, pouring of the libation, and presentations on the origin and significance of Juneteenth.

The Children’s Village has inflatables, games, face painting, crafts, and other fun, educational activities and information. The Health Fair includes COVID testing, vaccination appointments, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, and HIV screenings. Medical professionals from area health centers and hospitals are available for consultations.

The Fashion Show features Afro-centric and Urban clothing provided by local designers and retailers. Performers, dancers, and steppers that are a part of the fashion show will add to the party.

Organizations will have Exhibitor Booths to inform the men, women, youth, and families of services (mentoring, tutoring, mental health, substance abuse, job services, etc.) and activities (summer camp, day camp, after-school, athletic teams, etc.) available in the surrounding areas. Experts in their respective fields provide information, activities, and demonstrations.

Vendors sell an array of African and African-American clothing, art and artifacts, specialty items, crafts, and delicious foods.

The 18th Annual NC Juneteenth Celebration is sponsored by the City of Durham, Duke University Office of Community Affairs, Duke Health, Durham County Government, Dominion Energy, St. Joseph AME, NC African American Heritage Commission, CBS 17, WUNC-FM, The Vick Agency, Truist Bank, and Golden Belt.
