Straw Poll: Who Should Be Durham’s Next Mayor?

DURHAM, NC – Voters in Durham will elect a Mayor in the 2023 Municipal Election on Tuesday, November 7th. City of Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal announced in June that she would not seek re-election. Three At-Large Council members will also be elected.

Who would you like to be Durham’s next Mayor? Click here to participate in the Spectacular Magazine straw poll. We are using this straw poll to help politicians know the majority opinion before they begin their official campaigns and/or help them decide how to proceed. 

The Spectacular Magazine straw poll closes at 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 20th. The results of this poll will be made public on Friday, July 21st at 9:00 AM.

The candidate filing period began on Friday, July 7th, and is open until Friday, July 21st at noon. As of 5:00 pm July 18th, four candidates have filed to run for Mayor:

  • Charlitta Burruss
  • Sylvester Williams
  • Mike Woodard
  • DeDreana Freeman

Several other residents have expressed an interest in running for the office of Mayor and are rumored to plan to file by the deadline. The two candidates receiving the most votes in the 2023 Municipal Primary and Election on Tuesday, October 10th will move on to the Municipal Election.

  • October 13th (5:00 pm) Voter registration deadline for November Municipal Election
  • Tues., October 17th (11:00 am) Canvass meeting for October Municipal Primary and Election
  • Thurs., October 19th (8:00 am) – Sat., November 4th (3:00 pm) One-Stop early voting for November Municipal Election
  • Tues, October 31st (5:00 pm) Absentee request deadline for November Municipal Election
  • Tues., November 7th (6:30 am – 7:30 pm) Election Day – November Municipal Election
