Lawrence and Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund Hosts 8th Annual Legacy Scholarship Celebration
DURHAM, NC – The Lawrence & Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund (L&APSF) hosted its 8th Annual Scholarship Fund Legacy Celebration on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at the Washington Duke Inn. The Legacy Celebration was established to honor persons in Durham and vicinity who walk in the pathways of faith, family, history, and love of the late Rev. Lawrence Perry and the late Mrs. Artelia Marsh Perry (the axiom of the Scholarship Fund). Honorees for 2023 were “Leaders in Music Ministries of Area Churches” who walk in the pathways of faith, family, history, and love.
The 2023 Legacy Honorees were Karen Alston, St. John Baptist Church; Sandra H. Brunson, St. Mark AME Zion Church; Lemile D. “Vince” Chandler, Peace Missionary Baptist Church; Charletta Mack Hines, Kyles Temple AME Zion Church; Oren Monroe Marsh, Mt. Zion Baptist Church; Biddy Newborn, Mt. Calvary Word of Faith; Minister Roland W. Perry II, North East Baptist Church; Dr. Brennetta Simpson, Covenant Presbyterian Church; Gwendolyn Troy McKinney, Antioch Baptist Church and In Memoriam – Ruffin Deron Keys, Union Missionary Baptist Church.
The Lawrence & Artelia Perry Scholarship Fund (L&APSF), an IRS 501(c) (3) public charity, was established in 2011 to provide annual support for deserving, eligible students who are graduates of Durham Public Schools who are currently enrolled in one of the three supported colleges or university or a high school graduate who will attend Bennett College, Livingstone College, or North Carolina Central University. Dr. Tara L. Fikes, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, recognized the twelve 2023 Perry Scholarship Fund Awardees as follows: NCCU – Stephanie Anagor, Uziaa Gray, Triniti Long, Madison Knight, Mekayala Shaw, Devin Smith, Kamryn Sneed; Bennett College – Ciara Evans and Francy Rawls; and Livingstone College – Christine Bussey, Freddy Cuthbertson and Avery Fields.
The primary scholarship fundraising methods are proceeds from annual legacy celebrations, corporation sponsorships, direct donations, and sales of the book Artelia: Portrait of an African American Matriarch.
Celebration music was provided by each of the Legacy Music Honorees or a designee. This was a musical “Live Concert” that was enjoyed by all.
The Legacy Celebration Program Chair was Stilwyn Perry Brown, Mistress of Ceremonies was Second Vice President Jemma Boler. Dr. Dwight D. Perry is the L&APSF Board Chair.
