In addition to the block party announcement, Rapper Big Pooh and Phonte were recently honored by the City of Durham. The proclamation was presented by Mayor Elaine O’Neal, who also declared the month of June as Hip-Hop Appreciation Month.

Pooh (who originally hails from Virginia) said that it was especially nice to be honored by the city that molded them “not only as artists but as men.”

“If you was wack in Durham, muthaf-ckas would tell you about it,” Phonte chimed in, adding that it was hard to picture being honored with an award like this back in their early recording days. “To be recognized with an award like this is kinda surreal.”

This spring, LB wrapped a short tour stint where they hit four cities. They also recently made an appearance at The Roots Picnic in July. Individually, Pooh and Phonte have been busy with various projects. Pooh released a standout solo album last year, To Dream in Color, which emerged as one of the year’s best.

“The album started out as a story of my journey through the music industry for the past 20 years, but it became a project about my evolution as a man,” Pooh explained to Rock The Bells about the project, which was co-executive produced by Phonte.

Meanwhile, Phonte has continued his journey into TV and film, with his contributions to IFC’s sketch comedy show, Sherman’s Showcase. In 2021, he also executive produced soul singer, BEMYFIASCO’s debut album, Where I Left You, which was released on his +FE Music imprint. LB’s most recent album was 2019’s May The Lord Watch.
