Rom, Redbirds Down Durham Bulls

DURHAM, NC – The Memphis Redbirds continued a six-game road trip with a 9-4 win over the Durham Bulls at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday night.

With five runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the second, Memphis gave starting pitcher Drew Rom (8-6) plenty of run support in his St. Louis Cardinals organizational debut. The left-handed pitcher tossed 5.0 innings, allowed one earned run on one hit, struck out 10 and walked two.

Durham Bulls first baseman Jonathan Aranda notched an RBI with a blooper to left field that was mishandled and allowed Nick Dini to cross the plate.

Bull’s third baseman Austin Shenton hit a home run to center field in the bottom of the 4th.

Designated hitter Alex Jackson added his own home run to center field in the bottom of the 8th inning and shortstop. Vidal Brujan continued the trend in bottom of the 9th by finding his own way to get the ball over the center field wall.

At the plate, five Redbirds batters recorded two hits in the game. First baseman Luken Baker led the way with a 2-for-4 night with a home run, five RBI and a walk. Left fielder Juan Yepez and third baseman Nick Dunn each drove in a pair of runs.

Seven of the nine Memphis hitters recorded at least one base hit while eight batters reached base safely. With the win, Memphis returns to a .500 record on the 2023 season and even up the series at 1-1.

Newly-acquired Memphis pitcher Drew Rom (5.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO) earned the victory, while Durham’s Jacob Lopez (0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) suffered the defeat.

The two teams are scheduled to continue their six-game series at the DBAP on Thursday night, with first pitch set for 6:35pm. Starters for both teams are to be announced.
