ABC announced Tuesday (Sept. 26) that Roberts will become the new co-anchor for the popular news program one year after becoming a contributing anchor. She will join co-anchor David Muir and “will also continue to report across all programs and platforms as senior national affairs correspondent,” according to ABC. Amy Robach last held this role.

Roberts has been a part of 20/20 since 1995 and is lauded by ABC for “covering everything from profiles of political figures to the most shocking crime cases gripping the nation.”

“She is a skilled investigative journalist, oftentimes trekking across the country to conduct hard-hitting interviews providing viewers with relevant, insightful information,” said Kim Godwin, ABC News president, in a memo to staff. “Deborah is an empathetic reporter, bringing humanity to every story.”

She has been a member of the ABC News family since 1995 after her mentor, Barbara Walters, recruited her. She has reported for Nightline, Good Morning America, and World News Tonight with David Muir, and has guest co-hosted for The View and worked on Good Morning America as a substitute anchor. She is also an award-winning journalist, earning a Peabody Award for the 20/20 special Say Her Name: Breonna Taylor.

She has also earned multiple Emmy Awards for her coverage of events, including maternal mortality in Bangladesh and Africa’s AIDS crisis, and she is a member of the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. Roberts is also an author, with one of her books, Been There, Done That: Family Wisdom For Modern Times, written with her husband and Today meteorologist, Al Roker.
