Shaw Bears Face Tough Loss Against Virginia State Trojans, Yet History Has Been Made!
Durham, NC – Fresh from a win against the Vikings, where they showed solid defense by allowing only 77 rushing yards, Shaw University Bears geared up for their next game against the Virginia State Trojans. On September 30th, they faced the Trojans at Durham County Stadium at 1 PM.
In the first quarter, Virginia State took a lead of 14-0, scoring through touchdowns by Kemo Clarke, a transfer from Jackson State, and a fantastic 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jordan Davis to wide receiver Lucas Nunez. Shaw University managed to get some points on the board with a 7-yard touchdown run by Sidney Gibbs. However, Virginia State quickly responded, extending their lead to 28-6 at halftime with another touchdown by Clarke and an impressive 57-yard punt return by Roy Jackson III, highlighting Shaw’s defensive struggles.
During halftime, the Shaw University marching band and dance team wowed the crowd with their captivating performance, adding to the lively atmosphere in their red and gold.
The second half continued to be an uphill battle for Shaw, with Virginia State showcasing their offensive prowess, outgaining Shaw 428 to 305 in total yards. Jordan Davis, the Trojans’ quarterback, played a pivotal role, completing 15 of 24 passes for a remarkable 310 yards and two touchdowns. The Trojans further solidified their lead with a crucial 75-yard touchdown connection between Davis and Nunez, extending their advantage to 35-6 entering the fourth quarter. Kicker Matthew Ward’s flawless performance, with five successful extra points and a 22-yard field goal, added to the Trojans’ dominance. Shaw, however, showed resilience and determination, scoring touchdowns with a 12-yard pass from Patrick Blake to Manny Belcher and a one-yard push by Cruse.
Despite a strong effort, Virginia State emerged victorious with a final score of 38-19. Sidney Gibbs led Shaw’s rushing attack with 84 yards from 10 carries, displaying his determination on the field. A historic moment was made in Bears’ football history as India Pulphus became the first woman to score, sealing the game with an extra point kick after quarterback Silas Cruise’s one-yard touchdown run with only 52 seconds left in the contest.
