NCCU Campus Update: Notice of Campus Cyberintrusion Incident – Nov. 12, 2023

DURHAM, NC – The following statement was shared with North Carolina Central University (NCCU) students, faculty, and staff at approximately 5:21 p.m. tonight (Nov. 13).

Dear NCCU Community:

On the morning of Sunday, Nov. 12, 2023, NCCU Information Technology Services (ITS) was alerted to a possible cyberintrusion incident on our campus technology systems and began an investigation. Certain systems, including the campus wi-fi network and MyEOL began to experience some disruptions to normal operations. Other critical systems continue to be operational. Following the initial stages of the investigation into this alert, we can confirm that NCCU has experienced a cyberintrusion.

At this time, there is no reason to believe any personal or sensitive information was compromised. However, in an abundance of caution, we are notifying the campus community of the investigation to date and providing some steps in the attached Credit_Monitoring_Information document that individuals could take to protect their personal data. These steps are general best practices to follow to reduce the risk of identity theft.

What is NCCU doing to address the situation?

Certain services have been taken offline to contain the intrusion. Key partners at the UNC System Office, North Carolina Department of Information Technology, Joint Communications Task Force, FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and other partners have been activated to investigate and respond.

To further contain and assess the situation, ITS will temporarily shut down all critical systems requiring logins with NCCU credentials, including, for example, Wi-Fi, MyEOL, Canvas, and Outlook 365.

Classes

All face-to-face classes will continue to be held as scheduled. However, online classes will be suspended until further notice.

Further updates on the status of campus technology systems will be shared as information becomes available via campus notification tools, including voice and text messages.
