Saigo’s Big Day Leads Shaw MBB Over Bluefield State
BLUEFIELD, WV –Shayne Saigo notched a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds to help the Shaw men’s basketball team beat the Bluefield State Big Blue’s 95-92 on the road Thursday.
In addition to Saigo’s solid performance, the Bears (4-3, 1-1) were led by Trent McIntyre, who had 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals, and by DJ Thomas, who added 14 points.
Shaw grabbed 49 rebounds in Thursday’s game compared to Bluefield State’s 41, led by Saigo’s 10 boards. The Bears also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 16 rebounds into 12 second chance points.
The Shaw defense was a problem in Thursday’s game, forcing 19 Bluefield State turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. McIntyre’s three steals led the way individually for the Bears.
How It Happened
After falling behind 40-31, Shaw went on an 8-0 run with 3:22 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Saigo, to narrow its deficit to 40-39. Bluefield State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Bears down 43-41 entering halftime.
Bluefield State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 67-60 advantage before Shaw went on a 9-0 run to seize a 69-67 lead with 3:46 to go in the contest. The Big Blue’s then fought back to even things up at 76-76 and send the game to overtime. Shaw took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 35 points in the lane.
Bluefield State then snagged a 92-88 advantage with 1:41 left in the second overtime before Shaw responded by going on a 7-0 run to seize a 95-92 lead with 17 seconds to go in the period, a score which would hold for the rest of the game.
