NC Democrats Celebrate Election Success

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina Democrats gathered Tuesday night to celebrate the end of a divisive primary season. House minority leader Robert Reives called for unity, and the crowd at Maywood Hall and Garden certainly seemed united in its enthusiasm for outgoing governor Roy Cooper.

Democrats have fretted about who might succeed Cooper as a party standard-bearer with statewide electability. To a majority of primary voters on Tuesday, that successor is Attorney General Josh Stein

Stein took the stage and touted his accomplishments, such as protecting consumers and reducing the state’s backlog of rape kits.

Though the governor’s mansion is the ultimate prize for Democrats, down-ballot candidates had their moment in the spotlight.

Senator Rachel Hunt, daughter of former governor Jim Hunt and now nominee for lieutenant governor, briefly spoke to Spectacular Magazine.

If elected, Hunt looks forward to an ex officio seat on the State Board of Education. “It’s a great platform to advocate for people who are at a disadvantage.” She is particularly concerned for black, brown, low-income, and LGBT students. “They all need special, extra attention [and] there is not any way that the legislature is taking care of these children,” Hunt emphasizes that school is sometimes the only safe space for vulnerable youth.

If she is elected to serve as lieutenant governor alongside Mark Robinson (R) as governor, Hunt maintains that she would “speak the opposite…speak truth to people.”

Hear, hear.
