Seminoles Handle Business in Round 2 Finale

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State had zero interest in allowing recent history to repeat itself.

A year after seeing a 20-point second-half lead slip away in a stunning 2023 Ally ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament loss to Wake Forest, the sixth-seeded Seminoles maintained focus for a 70-53 victory over the 14th-seeded Demon Deacons in Thursday night’s second-round rematch.

FSU (22-9) moved on to Friday night’s 7:30 quarterfinal game versus third-seeded Syracuse (23-6). The Seminoles will seek to maintain an avenging mode after dropping the regular-season meeting to the Orange on the road by a 79-73 score on Jan. 18.

Junior forward Makayla Timpson led the Seminoles with 22 points and 13 rebounds setting a school single-season mark with her 16th double-double of the season. Timpson broke the previous FSU record of 15 set by WNBA All-Star Natasha Howard in 2013-14.

Ta’Niya Latson added 19 points for FSU, and O’Mariah Gordon had 12. Brianna Turnage added nine rebounds to Timpson’s record night as the Seminoles held a 46-33 advantage on the boards.

Alexandria Scruggs scored 14 points to lead Wake Forest (7-25) and Elise Williams scored 12.

The Seminoles, who never trailed, built a 37-17 halftime lead behind Timpson’s 16 points and seven rebounds. Latson added nine first-half points as FSU laid the groundwork for its eighth win in the last 10 games.
