Seeking Men Age 50+ For 50 Hoops Charity Basketball Tournament In Durham
DURHAM, NC – 50 Hoops is the first national prostate cancer basketball tournament targeted to African American men 50 and over. Ed and Pat Sanders founded the company after Ed went through prostate cancer and treatment. Dr. Claus Roehrborn, Head of Urology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, urged the couple to form a needed prostate cancer outreach to target African American men. Today, almost a quarter-century later, 50 Hoops remains the only national African American-founded prostate cancer basketball tournament that toured the US for over two decades and a national patient and accredited medical education nonprofit in the U.S., targeted to educate African American and underserved communities.
On Saturday, June 1, Duke Cancer Institute will host the National Prostate Cancer Awareness Basketball Tournament and Health Fair at the Community Family Life & Rec Center At Lyon Park (1309 Halley Street) from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The tournament will consist of 3 v 3 half-court games with four 8-minute quarters.
The cost for teams of 3-7 men is $150.00. Individuals may register as an “individual” for $35.00. 50 Hoops will put individuals on a team or make up a team with 3 or more individuals. The championship team gets medals, a trophy, a gift bag, and a $500.00 gift card. Also, the MVP receives a special gift.
Men age 49+ can sign up as a team or individual by calling 1-800-677-8441 (leave your name and phone number) or by clicking here. The deadline to register is May 25.
The National Physician and Family Referral, or NPFR Project (a subsidiary of 50 Hoops), was launched in 2000 with a grant from Pfizer to work with the National Human Genome Center (NHGC) at Howard University. With the launch of their partnership, they began nationwide outreach for prostate cancer and expanded to other cancers and diseases. 50 Hoops was able to leverage new national partners and expand their patient education programs in over three dozen U.S. cities.
50 Hoops has partnered with small to mega African American churches, community stakeholders, major teaching hospitals, health ministries, noted community health advocates, and Black Expos. More than 80% of their work is done face-to-face at a “ground-zero” community. Our patient education Lecture Series has reached over three dozen cities in the United States over the past 17 years.
