Durham Police File Petitions For Five Juveniles In String Of Vehicle Break-Ins And Thefts

DURHAM, NC – Durham Police investigators have filed juvenile petitions for five juveniles in connection with an ongoing trend of motor vehicle break-ins and thefts that have occurred in different parts of the city since December.

A juvenile petition is a document filed in juvenile court alleging that a juvenile is a delinquent or a status offender and asking that the court assume jurisdiction over the juvenile or that an alleged delinquent be transferred to criminal court for prosecution as an adult.

Those five juveniles are linked to one of three groups believed to be responsible for multiple stolen vehicles and dozens of motor vehicle break-ins that occurred between December 11th and April 13th of this year. All three groups of juveniles targeted vehicles in heavily populated areas such as apartment complexes, parking garages, hotels, residences, and businesses in different parts of the city.

All three groups have also been tied to motor vehicle thefts and break-ins in other jurisdictions.

Durham Police investigators are continuing to investigate several other cases of motor vehicle break-ins and thefts throughout the city. The investigators are working closely with surrounding agencies in the Triangle to file charges against those responsible for these incidents.

The Durham Police Department is asking community members to remember to secure their vehicles, park in well-lit areas, and remove spare car keys, valuables, and firearms from them. Please report any suspicious activity to 911.

Anyone with information about any of these cases is asked to call Corporal M. Henderson at 919-560-4440 ext. 29357. You can also call CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200 or online at www.durhamcrimestoppers.org.
