Local Non-Profit Hosts Workshop To Support Black Fathers And Caregivers
DURHAM, NC – On Saturday, June 1, Black fathers and caregivers in Durham will come together at Provident 1898 to discuss positive childhood experiences for Black youth in this community and to learn about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences. Saturday’s workshop, hosted by Empowered Parents in Community (EPiC), will provide strategies to build resilience and “break the cycle.” The free workshop will begin at 10:00 AM and will be facilitated by Dr. Clifton D. Garner, Sr. Psy. D, LCMHCA.
This workshop is designed to help fathers and caregivers understand adverse experiences and gain tools to incorporate protective factors and resilience into their everyday lives. Additionally, Saturday’s conversation will equip attendees with skills and resources to lessen the impact of adverse experiences on children in the care they may encounter. Last, this weekend’s event will connect Black fathers and caregivers with a close-knit community of individuals with whom they can exchange best practices and life stories.
“We know that Black fathers are most likely to be involved with their children’s daily activities, despite often being portrayed as absent and/or not engaged by the media, in movies, and on television. And we also know when fathers or father figures are actively engaged in a child’s everyday life, it provides a sense of security, increases confidence, and boosts feelings of belonging,” Jovonia Lewis, Executive Director of EPiC, said. “Our hope for this workshop is to come alongside Black fathers and caregivers in our community and help them gain knowledge about resources as they steadfastly support the mental health and resiliency of their children.”
