DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Director of Athletics Dr. Louis “Skip” Perkins has announced the appointment of Maurice Williams as the new Deputy Athletic Director for Strategic Communications, effective immediately.

“We are excited to have Maurice step into a key role in our athletics department,” said Dr. Perkins. “He comes to NCCU with a wealth of strategic communication experience with Historically Black Colleges and Universities [HBCUs], the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference [MEAC], NCAA Division I athletics, and the state of North Carolina that will be key in promoting our programs.”

Williams will oversee the strategic communications office at NCCU and serve as the primary contact for football.

“I would like to thank Dr. Perkins, Deputy AD for Internal Affairs, Dr. Kendra Greene, and Chief Brand Officer Stephen Fusi for the opportunity to join the staff at North Carolina Central University,” said Williams. “I look forward to the challenge of filling a position previously held by a mentor of mine, working closely with a very successful NCCU football program, and highlighting and publicizing all of our teams and student-athletes.”

Williams most recently served as an Associate Athletic Director for Sports Media at Jackson State University as a remote consultant while pursuing a doctoral degree at Clemson University. He was the primary contact for the Tigers’ football and men’s basketball programs.

For the past three years, while working towards an Educational Leadership Ph.D. in Higher Education at Clemson, Williams has also served as a communications assistant with the Tigers, working with students and graduate assistants while assisting with all home events.

Previously, Williams spent two and a half years as the Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) from 2019-2021, which NCCU is a member institution of. He was the conference’s primary contact for football, men’s basketball, softball, and men’s golf.

Williams joined the league office after serving as the Assistant Director of Media Relations at the University of Tennessee for two years (2017-2019). He was the Vols’ primary contact for softball and secondary contact for football.

Williams spent 10 years as the Director of Sports Information at Hampton University. He handled the office’s day-to-day operations and served as the primary media contact for football, men’s basketball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf.
In addition, Williams served as the sports administrator for golf, tennis, and softball and as an assistant professor in the Health, Recreation, and Physical Education department.

Williams currently holds memberships in the College Sports Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Black College Sports Information Directors of America (BCSIDA). At CoSIDA, Williams has served on the Committee-on-Committees Committee, the Scholarships Committee, the Academic All-Americans Committee, and vice-chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.

He was featured in the Feb. 2011 issue of CoSIDA Digest, and Williams was also the 2012 recipient of the CoSIDA Rising Star Award and a 2016 recipient of the CoSIDA President’s Award.

Prior to coming to Hampton, Williams was the Director of Sports Information at Div. II Shaw University. He was the primary media contact for all 13 of Shaw’s varsity sports and was responsible for creating and maintaining content for Shaw’s athletics website and other publications such as media guides, game notes, gameday programs, posters, and schedule cards.

A 2005 graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina, Williams got his start in sports information as an undergrad. There, he assisted with the day-to-day operations for volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, and softball, and Williams also supervised gameday management and produced gameday programs and record books.

In addition to a bachelor’s degree in English from Livingstone, Williams also holds two master’s degrees: one in Education from Old Dominion University (2011) and one in Sports Administration from Hampton (2014).
