‘The Front Room’ Trailer: Brandy Returns To Horror After 26 Years In A24 Film

A24 has recently released a new trailer for the upcoming horror movie The Front Room. The film stars Brandy Norwood, who returns to the horror genre for the first time in 26 years.

The latest entry from A24 is based on the short story written by author Susan Hill. Written and directed by Max Eggers and Sam Eggers, The Front Room also stars Andrew Burnap, Neal Huff, and Kathryn Hunter. The studio describes it as a “legendary face-off” between Brandy and Hunter, who plays “the wickedest mother-in-law of them all.” The film hits theaters on Sept. 6.

The official logline:

Everything goes to hell for newly pregnant Belinda (Brandy) after her mother-in-law (Kathryn Hunter) moves in. As the diabolical guest tries to get her claws on the child, Belinda must draw the line somewhere…

The beginning of the trailer shows Norwood driving a car, listening to Édith Piaf’s Je Ne Regrette Rien (No Regrets), and hard cutting to her receiving a call from her husband, telling her that his father had passed. The dead father’s one request was for his son to take in his mother and allow her to stay with the couple. It features a delightfully awkward and intense dinner scene, where the mother is chastising Norwood’s character over what to name the baby, among other uncomfortable comments. The trailer then shifts to the true horror of what the mother is truly up to when the husband says, “She thinks that the Holy Spirit possesses her and gives her power.” What follows are some truly creepy moments involving the mother and religious imagery.

Brandy’s First Horror Film in 26 Years

The Front Room marks Norwood’s return to the horror genre after appearing in 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Danny Cannon directed the late 90s horror flick, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Mekhi Phifer, Matthew Settle, and Jeffrey Combs. She was last seen in Netflix’s holiday film Best Christmas Ever and the ABC series Queens.

Norwood appears tremendously excited for audiences to see the film, and after being officially cast in the horror movie, she expressed her enthusiasm via her Instagram account. The post reads, “[I] can’t wait for ya’ll to see this. God, you’re Awesome!!!!! I trust you with my entire life. Thank you for this amazing opportunity to work with this unbelievable cast, crew, and the studio everyone wants to work with, and of course, my Eggers fam.”
