RALEIGH – Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas is taking on a new leadership role at the national level. She was appointed Monday to serve as chair of the Telecommunications and Technology Policy Steering Committee for the National Association of Counties (NACo) for the 2024-2025 term.

“I am honored to represent Wake County as I work with colleagues from across the country to improve access to and regulation of technology,” said Chair Thomas. “This new role builds on my efforts to expand high-speed internet connectivity and guide local government’s use of AI while helping bridge the digital divide.”

Thomas was appointed by incoming NACo President James Gore of Sonoma County, Calif., during the organization’s annual meeting July 12-15 in Hillsborough County, Fla.

The Telecommunications and Technology Policy Steering Committee addresses issues such as the county’s role as a regulator, service provider, and consumer; cable services; information technology; e-governance; and GIS data collection and utilization.

The news of Chair Thomas’ appointment comes as Wake County holds a series of Community Conversations to engage residents in discussions about barriers to broadband use. The county will also share information with attendees about its work to develop an actionable plan to ensure equitable, affordable, high-speed internet access for residents.
