‘The Deliverance’: In Lee Daniels’ Supernatural Drama Starring Andra Day, Glenn Close – Nothing Is As It Seems
Something isn’t right in Lee Daniels’ new film The Deliverance. Upon moving to a new home, Ebony Jackson (Andra Day, who won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination for her performance in Daniels’ most recent film, The People vs. Billie Holiday) finds herself fighting for her life against mysterious forces that could tear her family apart. It’s a battle of wills defining Ebony’s life — and her faith.
Daniels set out to put his stamp on a classic exorcism story, infusing it with the spirituality of the Black church. “In recent years, we’ve gotten some brilliant horror movies like Get Out, but my goals were different,” Daniels told Netflix. “This is supposed to scare you into believing in a higher power because it happened. It’s a story about demonic possession and the power of faith that’s grounded in reality. And that kind of dramatic storytelling has always interested me.”
What is The Deliverance about?
Ebony Jackson, a struggling single mother fighting her personal demons, moves her family into a new home for a fresh start. But when strange occurrences inside the home raise the suspicions of Child Protective Services and threaten to tear the family apart, Ebony soon finds herself locked in a battle for her life and the souls of her children. Inspired by a true story, The Deliverance is directed by Academy Award nominee Lee Daniels (Precious) and stars Andra Day, Glenn Close, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, and Mo’Nique in a genre-defying take on darkness, possession, and finding a higher power.
Is The Deliverance based on a true story?
In part. As the end credits reveal, The Deliverance is drawn from the true story of LaToya Ammons, whose Indiana home was allegedly haunted by spirits. “Because this was based on a true story, there was some hesitation, on my end, around touching it. So I let it sit for a while,” Daniels said. However, the filmmaker ultimately found his way into the story when he realized it was about faith as much as it was about fear. “In the story, LaToya Ammons finds Jesus,” he said. “And I felt, with everything going on in the world, we all needed that. We all need to find a higher power.”
