Durham Police Detain 9 Individuals, Seize 9 Guns After Spotting Stolen Car at Hotel

DURHAM, NC – On Thursday, September 26, Durham police officers detained a total of nine individuals, including five juveniles. They confiscated nine handguns as part of a stolen car investigation that brought them to a local hotel.

The incident began on Tuesday, September 24, when officers spotted a stolen vehicle in the hotel’s parking lot in the 5200 block of Page Road. The car had previously been involved in a hit-and-run crash during which shots were fired. Officers conducted surveillance in the parking lot and eventually linked the suspects to a specific hotel room.

After obtaining a search warrant on Thursday, September 26, officers detained four adults and four juveniles inside the hotel room, as well as a fifth juvenile outside the room. During the search, officers found nine handguns, including two that had been reported stolen. Additionally, they discovered another stolen vehicle nearby.

Two of the adults, Maurice Keys, 19, and Jahquez Brown, 20, were charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and four counts each of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Charges are pending against the other adults involved.

Three juveniles were taken to the Department of Juvenile Justice on existing secure custody orders, while a fourth was served with a failure to appear petition. Charges are also pending against the remaining juvenile.
