NCCU’s Moton Set to Receive President’s Lifetime Achievement Award

DURHAM, NC – North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) men’s basketball head coach, LeVelle Moton, will be honored with the 2024 President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding service and contributions to the community.

The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award, established by President George H. W. Bush as part of the Points of Light initiative, is awarded to individuals who have made a significant and lasting impact through volunteer work. This prestigious award acknowledges those who have dedicated considerable time and effort to improving their communities and positively influencing the lives of others.

Moton, a celebrated former basketball player at NCCU, made a name for himself in the Triangle area during the late 1990s. He earned numerous accolades, including the CIAA Player of the Year award in 1996, and scored over 1,700 points during his college career. As head coach, Moton has become the all-time winningest men’s basketball coach at NCCU, achieving his 252nd victory last season.

Beyond his success on the court, Moton has made a profound impact off the court. He founded the Velle Cares Foundation, which hosts back-to-school drives, teacher appreciation programs, and the Single Mothers Salute celebration. Additionally, Moton is deeply involved in creating affordable housing through Raleigh Raised Developments, a project close to his heart.

Reflecting on his journey, Moton shared, “I just hope people respect what I do through my work, through my commitment, through my dedication, through my community, and through other people in touching the lives of these young men.”

The President’s Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony honoring Moton and other recipients from Durham County will take place on October 5, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the North Carolina Central University Student Center in Durham.
