RALEIGH, NC – The NC Counts Coalition had the honor of hosting Vice President Kamala Harris in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s devastation across Western North Carolina. In a display of solidarity and support, the Vice President actively participated in relief efforts, working alongside NC Counts staff and volunteers to pack essential supplies for families in need. Her hands-on involvement highlighted her deep appreciation for the grassroots initiatives that have been pivotal in the coalition’s swift and effective response to the storm.

Stacey Carless, Founding Executive Director of NC Counts Coalition, provided Vice President Harris with an overview of the coalition’s remarkable mobilization efforts. Carless detailed how NC Counts coordinated the delivery of two trucks, four vans, a trailer, and an airplane filled with critical items such as food and hygiene products to support affected communities. Additionally, the coalition successfully raised and regranted over $65,000 to its member organizations on the front lines to assist with immediate relief.

Vice President Harris praised the coalition’s initiatives, stating, “You all are the heroes among us because I do believe that in moments of crises, heroes are revealed who just step up to help people in need and to show that kind of strength that people need to feel in each other.” Her visit underscored the coalition’s capacity to activate a diverse network of organizations that work together in partnership to meet the urgent needs of communities across Western North Carolina.
