AG Josh Stein: New Law Requires Full Event Ticket Prices Upfront, Eliminates Hidden Fees

RALEIGH – North Carolinians will now see the total price of event tickets upfront, thanks to a new provision in S607 spearheaded by Attorney General Josh Stein. The law mandates that ticket sellers like Ticketmaster and SeatGeek display the total cost, including fees, at the start of the purchasing process, not just before checkout. This change comes after recent frustrations with hidden fees, especially highlighted during the rush for Concert for Carolina tickets, a benefit event for Hurricane Helene relief.

“I was pleased to work with legislators of both parties to protect people’s money and help them make informed decisions about their purchases,” said Attorney General Josh Stein. “I also want to thank ticket sellers for being part of the solution by agreeing to a fairer playing field for North Carolinians who want to attend and enjoy live shows. Now, when you buy a ticket to something, you won’t see one price at the beginning and a different, significantly higher price at checkout.”

Grammy-winning artist and MacArthur Grant recipient Rhiannon Giddens praised the legislation, emphasizing the need for transparency in ticket sales. “I’m thrilled that North Carolina has set this standard, ensuring consumers see the full price from the beginning without surprise fees,” she said.

Previously, many ticket platforms displayed a lower initial price, only to add hidden fees at checkout, putting sellers with upfront pricing at a disadvantage. Now, all platforms must disclose the total ticket price and a breakdown of any fees before a transaction is completed. Violations of this law will be considered unfair and deceptive trade practices, enforceable by the Attorney General’s Office.

Joe Freeman, Vice President of Government Relations at SeatGeek, also supported the law, stating, “This reform ensures fans have greater clarity and transparency, and we are proud to be part of North Carolina’s push for a fairer ticketing system.”
