The Gerontology Research Group (GRG) validated her age. Currently residing in Durham, Mrs. Ferrell’s life is a testament to longevity and resilience.

Early Life

Catherine Ferrell was born in Warsaw, North Carolina, and raised by her mother, Callie Spearman, alongside her sister, Mary. She graduated as valedictorian from Frederick Douglass High School in 1931 and excelled as a member of the school’s basketball team.

From a young age, Ferrell was instilled with the value of education by her mother, who ensured that both daughters attended Sunday school weekly. Although she aspired to become a teacher, financial constraints prevented her from attending college. Nonetheless, she found fulfillment in teaching Sunday school for much of her life.

Later Life

Mrs. Ferrell has remained engaged in civic life. She voted in the 2016 United States presidential election and again in the 2018 elections for the United States House of Representatives in North Carolina.

A person of deep faith, Ferrell attributes her long life to God’s grace. On her 110th birthday in 2022, she received heartfelt birthday wishes from President Joe Biden and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. Remarkably, at 112, she continues to walk with the aid of a cane, showcasing her resilience.

Following the passing of Virginia Van Peenen on October 25, 2022, Ferrell became the oldest known living person in North Carolina.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, seven confirmed living Americans are over 110 years old, making them American supercentenarians. While some additional claims exist, the accuracy of documentation from 110 years ago may vary, making Mrs. Ferrell’s milestones all the more significant.
