PITT COUNTY, NC—In a historic move, the Pitt County Board of Education has named Dr. Steve Lassiter the new permanent superintendent, marking the first time an African American will hold this role in the district. The appointment was made during a 5:00 p.m. meeting on November 4, during which board members voted to confirm Lassiter’s position after his service as interim superintendent since May, following the retirement of Dr. Ethan Lenker earlier this year.
Dr. Lassiter, a native of Edenton, North Carolina, began his career in education in 2004 as a classroom teacher after graduating from East Carolina University (ECU). His dedication to educational leadership led him to pursue further qualifications, ultimately earning his doctorate in Educational Leadership. With nearly two decades of experience in education, Dr. Lassiter has held various roles in North Carolina school districts, from principal to district administrator, demonstrating a commitment to fostering student success and supporting educators.
Before stepping into the interim superintendent role, Dr. Lassiter served as the deputy superintendent of Pitt County Schools, where he was instrumental in leading district-wide initiatives focused on equity, academic achievement, and community engagement.
