Durham Police Investigate Early Sunday Morning Shooting Involving Officer

DURHAM, NC – The Durham Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Sunday morning in the 4700 block of Hope Valley Road.

At approximately 12:08 a.m. on November 17, 2024, officers responded to reports of a “car club” racing in the area. Upon arrival, a Durham officer encountered a crowd and vehicles involved in the activity. Objects were thrown at the officer and his patrol car, prompting the officer to exit the vehicle to address the situation.

During a brief foot pursuit, the suspect brandished a handgun and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon. The suspect raised the firearm, at which point the officer discharged their weapon, striking the individual. The suspect fled the scene and entered a vehicle with multiple occupants. A description of the vehicle was broadcast over the radio, and another officer successfully stopped it. That officer provided aid to the injured suspect until EMS arrived.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. No officers were injured during the incident.

Durham Police Department Chief Patrice Andrews held a press briefing at 2:45 a.m. Sunday at the Department’s Headquarters, 602 E. Main Street.

Per standard procedure, the officer involved has been placed on administrative duty. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) and the Durham Police Department’s Professional Standards Division are conducting parallel investigations into the shooting.

This remains an active investigation. No additional information is expected to be released until Monday morning.
